Translated from LifeNews.ru:
The shocking incident took place in Novosibirsk. Man arrested for a brawl suffered serious burns while sitting handcuffed inside the police car. Later he died in hospital.
Andrei Slesarev was arrested during the celebration of his birthday. He got drunk and raised hell at home. His family called the police and the local police patrol detained the brawler.
However, few hours later the family of Slesarev received bad news – the man died in the burn intensive care unit of the city hospital. The cause of death was absolutely incomprehesible.
- The car dashboard caught fire while my father was inside. We were told that he had burns over 60 percent of his body, – says Slesarev’s daughter Nadezhda.
Most likely it happened due to a short circuit. When the cops arrived and saw the flaming car, they called firefighters who extinguished the fire. Only then they managed to get out the burnt man.
Patrol staff claims that the detainee was left locked in a car for only 15 minutes.
- Policemen said that they took Slesarev from his home address and were transporting him to the police station. On their way they received another emergency call to handle, – told investigators to LifeNews. – When they returned, the car was burning. They tried to extinguish it while Andrei was locked inside rolling in pain.
Slesarev was taken to the burn center. He had burns on 55 percent of his body surface and burns of the respiratory tract. Few hours later he died in the hospital.
- Mom called the police at night, because father was brawling a bit, – says the crying daughter of the deceased, Nadezhda. – He was arrested and taken away. And just this morning we learned that he perished in the fire. The circumstances were not specified. My mother is on the verge of a nervous breakdown, she blames herself for what has happened.
Ministry of Internal Affairs will investigate the actions of the police.
- According to the results of investigation, the relevant measures will be taken in regards of the officers responsible for this accident, up to dismissal from police, – commented from the press center of the Ministry.

Maybe the man tried to smoke, but was drunk and dropped the cigarette or carelessly ignited something with the lighter – even his own coat, for example?
This sounds like the likeliest version.
Some of the comments and theories are just plain weird.
I also think that if the cops really wanted to get rid of the man – they would find much easier ways than burning the car.
The question, however – what is the protocol for such cases when there is one detainee in the car and another emergency call comes?
Can the detainee be left unattended?
I agree, this seems most likely. Was any analysis done?
