Homophobia in Russia among Politicians
Yesterday Newsland.ru published an article titled “Lavrov Refused to Recognize Homosexuality as Universal Value”.
“In Russian society, vast majority of which adheres to the Christian Orthodox tradition, homosexuality will not be accepted,” – said the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sergey Lavrov. “Sexual minorities attempt to load the universal values with their own understanding of human rights. And when we try to protect our society from the promotion of homosexuality – it often results in nervous reaction from the European Union. I, however, think that these efforts go beyond the universally recognized values,” – said Lavrov in the interview to radio station Kommersant FM.
“In our [society] where the overwhelming majority of the population are Orthodox Christians, or at least adheres to the Orthodox tradition, such appendices to the universal values will hardly give [positive] results,” – said the minister. “After all, other non-European civilizations also have their own values which will hardly make roots on European soil,”- he added.
On March 11 the governor of St. Petersburg Georgiy Poltavchenko signed a bill banning the promotion of homosexuality and pedophilia among minors. Relevant amendments were made to the law “On Administrative Offences in St. Petersburg.”
<…>
This bill was widely criticized by Western politicians. Particularly, the U.S. State Department expressed its concern over the legislation.
Homophobia in Russia among General Population
No matter how dismayed one might be reading such statement from Russia’s high ranked official – this is just an opinion of one man.
I assume, however, that the readers of this post will be much more disappointed with the comments left by Russian netizens to this piece of news.
chelovekzemli: Homos are “value of society”? Wow – those Anglo-Saxons… Go, f*** in the a** and get the Order of Friendship of Peoples.
aleksandr5000: Sick of you, faggots, go to……..Amsterdam.
groza negodyaev (replying to aleksandr5000): Why to Amsterdam? In Kazan police is very interested in men’s asses. Those are real faggots.
AP1001: Amsterdam is already occupied by drug addicts. Faggots should go to Brussels and London or Washington. Also [they are welcome] in American army.
Predstavitel ER: Soon heterosexuality will be outlawed and then normal people will have to hide and prove that they are homosexuals and lesbians in front of fascist faggots.
poleskypartizan: They are sick people, normal man can’t show interest in the ass of another…, they must [be taken] to reservation and treated through a forced labor so that the ass doesn’t relax.
rus-patr: I say the same – why in the USSR it was “punished”? If there was such law, then probably there were gays, but somehow they were treated. At least, they didn’t intrude with their demands to organize gay-parades in hero-city Moscow.
YuzhUral: Why is our minister of foreign affairs concerned with the problem of “ass-pokers” and “cock-suckers”; have we already solved all international problems?
DAM 2012 (replying to the comment above): Because currently this is the most important international problem. And we want to be in the vanguard of the world politics.
Leadoff: For many Europeans homosexuality is hereditary, cause they had burnt more beautiful on fires… than people died from the plague.
Niko: Russia still has chances for revival, if we have such attitude to homosexuality, as Lavrov says.
Black Technologist: The fun will start when Russia is occupied by gay invaders bombing us with smart gay bombs under the guise of protecting the rights of gay people… [There will be] concentration camps for straight patriots, compulsory pervert propaganda and totalitarian tolerance and celebration of juvenile justice. Children will be taken away from straight parents and raised in gay orphanages! Or those who are pretty will go as pedophilic slaves and those who are not – as donors for organs!!
zavval: Legal and legalized homosexuality is the “achievement” of Western “democracy”!!! Russia didn’t have and doesn’t have democracy, and even if it appears in the future, it will be our – Russian [democracy], without homosexuality! Otherwise, Russia won’t be Russia!!! It will be a different country then!
tapetum: He should also refuse to acknowledge gonorrhea as the universal value. Hopefully, I didn’t write anything homophobic? Noone will trial me?
wasilek: We shouldn’t allow homosexuality to take root in Russia. This is deviation from traditional values. Such people should be treated and prohibited to distribute their sick affections to the rest of the normal society. This is mental disease of catholic priests.
chernokoren (replying to wasilek): Almost completely agree with you – only will add from myself that homosexuality is not only the deviation from the common moral norm, but also deep deviation from the biologic norm, symptom of biologic degradation.
But what does it have to do with priests?
putalex: I suggest to collect all gays and lesbians on two close islands (island to each) …………then we will see …………
ilihan (replying to the comment above): Better on one [island] – Great Britain is the best [for them].
zvezdunov: It seems that not recognizing the “universal values” will close Russia’s entrance to European community …)
zinzibar (replying to zvezdunov): Russia doesn’t need to enter anywhere. Russia doesn’t need faggots.

Oh Russia you’re getting no where if you continue to discriminate hundreds of million of people. You never will…
If you are a gay or lesbian, Russia is definitely not the right place to go.
It’s just too much for as*.
This is more or less what Canada’s Department of Foreign Affairs said to its gay citizens – “Don’t go to Russia!”
http://news.nationalpost.com/2012/03/16/canada-warns-gay-travellers-to-russia-on-heels-of-law-banning-homosexual-propaganda/
We did not teach tolerance, fortunately. If you an adequate person, whether you’re gay or lesbian, you will be treated adequately. people should be treated as they deserve, not for their skin color or orientation. yes we have bunch of retards, like everywhere
I don’t like gays. And don’t want that my son sees it. And I’m sure the homosexualism is just debauchery and immorality.
Discrimination is a regular thing in Russia.
@Je: I think that many people hold the same point that – even though it’s easier to understand homosexuality, it’s hard to accept when it comes to our own family.
@dereh: What kind of discrimination do you mean? Discrimination of homosexuals or something else?
fucking queers
LOL. amazed no one see’s their point. I know its a hard concept guys- But Civilizations are built upon certain traditional values and principles. Its obvious the further America has gotten away from them- the more degenerate its society has become. If you cant see the paralleling trend, you are pushing your ideological narrative.
I don’t agree with Russia on so many things, but they are preserving themselves here.
How so very, very true. I hail from Canada and I remember a similar debate that involved allowing RCMP officers of the islamic faith to wear their turbans on the job. Now, com’on sure in Canada we pride ourselves on tolerance – religion, sexual orientation, you name it. But we are talking a national symbol – the Mountie. In that case, why have uniforms at all.. why not have the cops patrol in drag – after all, it would be an infringement on their rights not to let them express their “gay pride” on the job and off. Some things just have a way of getting out of control especially on account of pinheads that “just wish that everybody got along”. It don’t work like that, people! Common sense…. ah, what happened to good old common sense….
Most of Europe and North America is embarrassed by and for Russia. After reading the comments on this article, the IGNORANT and homophobic comments I feel sorry for the gay people that live in that country. It’s like these people are from another century.
Russia is one of the most homophobic places in the world (after the Muslim countries where they sentence people to death for homosexuality). Everything you wrote in this article is right, but you can’t imagine what’s it really like to be gay or lesbian in Russia, even in the biggest cities like Moscow and St.Petersburg. Russian Orthodox Church is to blame. They openly say that if you’re not heterosexual, you are not only a sinner, you are not human. We also have a LAW here forbidding people to come out or even mention homosexuality in public (it’s called “law against homosexual propaganda”) – check the recent news. If you come out, you will be fired from your job. People trying to do non-violent protests are getting arrested and beaten up by the police, while religious freaks who also beat them and throw rotten eggs in their faces are never arrested, but encouraged. We just wish Europe or USA could help us, but how? Russian government doesn’t care for any other government’s opinion. They keep talking about “rotten western values” that USA and Europe promote. We have, as they say, “the one true way”, which is basically the way of hatred, intolerance and violence. To live here and be treated as a human being, you HAVE to be of Russian ethnicity, heterosexual, look & dress “normally” and – most important – be a member of the Russian Orthodox Church. Doesn’t it sound familiar to Hitler’s Third Reich?…
It’s nice to see that not everyone in Russia shares such homophobic values.
To those who say acceptance of homosexuality is the sign of a decline, I’d point out that historical Chinese and Roman empires accepted homosexuality to much greater degrees than the backward medieval Europeans – which ones were more powerful? Societies mired in ignorance and decline are the ones which turn to persecution.
Most American politicians are anti-gay – even ones that are gay. :D If one goes to any rural area of the USA, one will find similar sentiment, as in the comments by the Russians above. Likely it will be even worse and quite violent. Anti-gay sentiment in Russia gets hyped because it’s Russians doing it. Russians don’t help this image, either, because they still have not learned to hide their prejudices, like most people in the USA now do.
The anti-gay sentiment is against male gays, BTW. Lesbians are quite popular in Russia. One pop group was the most popular group in Russia for a couple of years mostly because they openly promoted themselves as lesbian. It was this video that sent them to #1 status in Russia and kept them there for a couple of years:

I tried posting this all as one comment, but it didn’t go through, so I broke it up into 2 comments in case it was a length issue. If it ends up I double posted, sorry.
Here’s an ad:

The ad wasn’t banned in Russia, BTW. Perhaps it was banned just in America. ;)
This is dumb. If we dont get past all these ridiculous arguements about human rights russia isnt going anywhere fast. We have serious problems and need real and lasting change and advancement. Give the people their damn rights irregardless to what you believe about it. I dont care about gays and lesbians let they do whatever they want to, I dont even want to be part of a ridiculous arguement about it distracting me from real issues.
