Snapshot from the social ad filmed by the environmental activists of Mariupol

Mariupol is the 10th biggest city in Ukraine.

Unfortunately, it is more known for being the city with the most polluted air in Ukraine and Europe (by pollution coming from the stationary sources).

The main reason for this unflattering title is the bad location of two industrial units: metallurgic factory “Azovstal” and chemical factory “Markokhim” (which in 2005 was unified with “Azovstal”). Due to the prevalent wind rose in Mariupol, most emissions from these factories are carried directly to the central areas of the city.

Below is the video illustrating the magnitude of the city’s environmental problem. Camera overlooking the city’s residential area records the timelapse of 1 hour (sped up to 1 min 20 sec).

Comments of Ukrainian and Russian netizens

MrHanniballLekter:  That’s Mordor!

DawnHouse1:  Residents of Mariupol who don’t behave well, after death go to Mariupol again.

godmode:  Hmm, judging from the smoke color, it’s obviously not CO2 and H2O as it should be.

Skat:  I remember how we drove in a tour bus through Plzen in the Czech Republic. In the past there was metallurgical production. The German guide commented: “Here they used to melt metal. It was very harmful industry. Now it is closed, and the steel comes from Ukraine…  Chernobyl wasn’t enough for them ….”

motorin:  Yes, this summer I drove through Mariupol and I was stunned by this “little factory” and its stench. Life there is f**king hell, and though I am the resident of Moscow, yet I was gobsmacked by that stench!

maugli:  Smoke from the factory means that the city is alive.

andrebbn:  And I grew up in this city and don’t regret. I don’t live there already for 13 years. Yes, the ecology is bad, but people in this city are very good in general!)

jekann:  500,000 people EVERY DAY breath this shit! One third of newborn children have pathology!500 000 человек ЕЖЕДНЕВНО дышат этим дерьмом!

Azimut:  Looks like a movie about the post-apocaliptic future.

MariG:  I have lived in Mariupol for 20 years. It’s terrible how the city had changed for worse in that period. The sea turned into a sump, the air is disgusting. When you drive near Azovstal, it’s just impossible to breathe! I remembered how one time I went for job interview in the lab of that factory, while I walked back and forth through the whole territory I got covered with black dots. Thanks God, I didn’t have to work there.
