From RU-CHP:
On August 25th a young sportsman was submitted to the trauma center of Rostov-on-Don city hospital.
34-year-old powerlifter Igor Golushkin competed in the weight category up to 90 kg, when he tried to press 185 kg. This was Igor’s first serious competition.
According to eyewitness, the sportsman used unsafe (banned) technique called “open grip” [ed: possibly related to the position of thumb while holding the bar]. Already during the training session he had the weight of 160 kg slipping from his hands, but then spotters managed to hold the bar.
During the competition, however, the spotters did not succeed to catch the bar in time. Everything happened very quickly. With the torn diaphragm and broken ribs the sportsman was brought to hospital.
UPDATE: The injury appeared to be fatal. Igor died in hospital from heart concussion.

archistanton: Giving to drink water – surely fucking awesome first help.Дать попить воды – это конечно очень пиздатая первая помощь.
maxormaxor (replying to the above): Taking in account that in the cases of abdominal traumas – it’s absolutely forbidden to give water. It really can kill.учитывая, что при травмах брюшной полости категорически нельзя давать воду. Это реально может добить.
buglyckp (replying to the above): Actually, yes. The description is bullshit.кстати да в описании хуйня
maxormaxor (replying to the above): The orcs [ed: possibly referring to the spotters or organizers] decided to put the blame on the athlete.Орги решили свалить на спортсмена.

Yeesh. Its a dangerous sport, and I couldn’t watch the video because of sympathetic pain, heck, almost skipped the post. Is amazing about the posts, they seem calm and quite discerning. In that kind of competition, the spotters have to be spot on, because accidents happen, and they happen fast….
UPDATE:
Police is investigating the case.

Not going to watch the video either. The photo is more than enough for me.
So many things done wrong there on both the sportman’s and spotters’ parts.
all i can say is GAWD DANG
reinforcing my preference for bodyweight exercise…
Would have made more sense to use protective catches that do not allow the bar to squash the contestant.
He was using standard grip … And the red shirt spotter should be in fuckin jail.
