Today there are no cities or streets in Russia named after Joseph Stalin.
But there are people who sincerely cherish his memory and others who use his name as a brand.
About half a year ago a controversy erupted over the portrait of Stalin being printed on the students’ notebooks for Russian schools. They were manufactured as part of the series “Great names of Russia”, in which the ex-Soviet leader shared place with such characters as Catherine the Great, Sergei Rachmaninoff, Yuri Gagarin and others.
The question whether Stalin should be featured on exercise books for children has been widely discussed in Russian media.
In order to present the variety of opinions, I have translated some comments of Russian netizens to the recent blog post on this topic.
Is there place for comrade Stalin on the cover of notebooks?
martin_luter: Do we need on notebooks some illiterate Caucasian criminal? You might as well ask – do we need Yagoda or Chikatilo? Though, I guess some sovoks would vote for Chikatilo as well.
zina_korzina (replying to the above): It’s not about the “hand” but about the image. Take Napoleon or Frederick the Great – they are constantly aestheticized. And why is Vissarionovich (ed: Stalin’s paternal name) worse?Тут дело не в ‘руке’, а в образе. Вот Наполеон или Фридрих Великий – их эстетизируют постоянно. Чем они хуже Виссарионыча?
aminales (replying to the above): I don’t remember Napoleon having the concentration camps for people of his own country or mass executions of dissents.я не помню при Наполеоне лагерей для людей своей страны и массовых расстрелов несогласных
marss2 (replying to the above): Well, in the USSR since Khrushchev there were no mass repressions – they were not needed any longer.ну СССР тоже не имел начиная с Хрущова массовых репрессий – необходимость отпала

If people died for him with blind faith, it is not reason to display Stalin as hero. Especially with highest honors. In my opinion it’s immoral .
He’s part of Russian history, how could you honestly exclude him? In the end, it shouldn’t be about displaying him in one light or the other, it should have lists and histories of what he did, and how he treated people. Opinions should end up being made by the people reading the history books, so they can understand what he did it for, and so people can see his mistakes, so that history does not repeat itself.
